March is Save Your Vision Month
Posted by: Medical Center Ophthalmology Associates in Eye Health

Save Your Vision Month was established in 1927 by American Optometric Association (AOA) members. During this month and throughout the year, we provide vital eye care that goes beyond correcting vision and emphasizes preventive eye health to our patients. We encourage you to prioritize your eye health by scheduling a comprehensive eye exam and recognizing the importance of good eye health, not just this month but all year round.
During Save Your Vision Month and throughout the year, take care of your eyes with these healthy tips and share them with your loved ones. By doing so, you’re not only taking care of your own eyes but also helping others maintain healthy eyes, showing your responsibility and care for their well-being.
Have A Colorful Plate
Eating a balanced diet of colorful fruits and veggies, eggs, and fish is incredibly beneficial in maintaining your health. By incorporating these essential nutrients in leafy greens, berries, beets, citrus, and certain fish high in Omega 3s, you’re taking control of your health and empowering your vision to stay healthy.
Stay Hydrated
Remember that dehydration reduces the lubrication of your eye, making eye strain and dry eye even more uncomfortable. By keeping your water bottle filled and with you throughout the day, you’re being proactive and attentive to your eye health, ensuring your eyes stay comfortable and healthy.
Have Fun and Stay Active
Exercising 3-4 times a week significantly benefits your eyes and overall health. It reduces your blood and eye pressure, which is beneficial for lowering your Glaucoma risk. Crank up your favorite tunes and dance in your living room or enjoy a walk around the neighborhood and enjoy nature.
Renew Your Makeup Bag
Remember to add your eye makeup products to your routine calendar to remind yourself when to replace them. Mascara and liquid eyeliners should be replaced every three months, while eyeshadows and eye pencils expire in twelve months. It is also essential to exercise caution while using eyelash extensions due to the glue ingredients that can potentially harm your vision.
Protect Yourself From The Warm Sun Rays
Remember to wear hats, sunglasses, and protective goggles when necessary. As the days get longer and the sun shines brightly, remember to protect your eyes with 100% UV-blocking glasses. Just as sunscreen shields your skin from harmful sun rays, glasses protect your eyes from damaging light.
Take A Digital Break
More people today of all ages spend many hours each day looking at a tablet, computer, or phone. To save your vision and adopt the 20/20/20 rule, limit your digital eye strain by taking a break from your screen every 20 minutes. During this break, focus on something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This simple rule can significantly reduce the strain on your eyes and help maintain your vision.
Crush the Habit
Smoking has been linked to a significantly increased risk for several eye conditions, including Glaucoma, Cataracts, AMD, and Diabetic Retinopathy. Smokers are also twice as likely to develop Uveitis, an inflammation of the uvea that can lead to vision loss. Furthermore, smoke exacerbates dry-eye conditions. The good news is that people who quit smoking almost reduce their risk compared to people who have never smoked. By quitting smoking, you’re not only improving your overall health but also significantly reducing your risk of developing these serious eye conditions.
Schedule Your Eye Exam
Don’t delay or deny yourself from scheduling your eye exam TODAY! Regular eye exams can detect serious health concerns, such as diabetic retinopathy, which is diagnosed with a dilated eye exam. They can also catch glaucoma, a silent, sneaky disease that can often go unnoticed until irreparable vision loss. By scheduling your eye exam, you’re taking a proactive step toward maintaining your eye health.
National Save Your Vision Month is an initiative launched by the AOA to create awareness about eye care. Participation in this initiative is as easy as scheduling your eye exam and encouraging others to do the same.
